HSE guidance HSG258 describes the test as a visual inspection, a review of technical performance and an assessment of whether the extraction still controls exposure as it is used. Give the examiner your commissioning report, logbook and last report, and keep the new record for at least five years.

A practical guide

Before you commission a new LEV system

  1. Describe the process

    Tell each company what the process gives off, where it happens, how often it runs and where people stand while they work. The design starts from this, and it lets you compare quotes for the same job.

  2. Ask who will design it

    BOHS P602 covers basic LEV design. HSE does not require any particular qualification, so ask what similar systems the designer has worked on and ask for references.

  3. Agree how it will be commissioned

    HSE guidance HSG258 covers commissioning as well as design and testing. The commissioning report records how the new system performs, and later tests compare their readings with it. BOHS P604 covers commissioning.

  4. Ask for a user manual and logbook

    Routine checks follow the user manual and the checks set out in the logbook. Ask who will train the people using the system. No logbook? Use the free LEV log book template.

  5. Plan the first test

    When the system controls exposure to a hazardous substance, COSHH requires a thorough examination and test at least once every 14 months, or more often for the processes in Schedule 4. The LEV test due date calculator works out the deadline.

What does an LEV designer do?

They decide how to capture the dust, fume or vapour at its source and choose the hoods, ductwork, air cleaner and fan to do it. The commissioning report then records how the finished system performs.

How do I contact a company about design or installation?
