A practical guide
Before you hire an extraction company
Describe the work
Tell each company what process makes the dust or fume, how often it runs and where people stand while they work, so every quote covers the same job.
Ask how it will be commissioned
HSE guidance HSG258 covers designing, installing and commissioning LEV as well as testing it. The commissioning report records how the new system performs, and later tests compare their readings with it. Keep it for the life of the equipment where possible.
Ask for a user manual and logbook
Routine checks follow the user manual and the checks set out in the logbook. Ask who will train the people using the system. No logbook? Use the free LEV log book template.
Plan the first test
When the system controls exposure to a hazardous substance, COSHH requires a thorough examination and test at least once every 14 months, or more often for the processes in Schedule 4. The LEV test due date calculator works out the deadline.
BOHS P602 covers basic LEV design, P604 covers commissioning and management, and P601 covers thorough examination and testing. Ask each company which apply to the people doing your work.

Do dust and fume extraction systems need testing?
Yes, when they control exposure to substances hazardous to health. COSHH requires local exhaust ventilation to be thoroughly examined and tested at least once every 14 months, or more often for the processes in Schedule 4.
